The 2026 season ran from early January through February 22nd — officially. In Rio, the end date has always been more of a suggestion. In between, 462 blocos logged nearly 1,800 hours of live music across seven weeks, and 6.8 million people turned out across the city. At the Sambadrome, Unidos do Viradouro claimed the Special Group title with a perfect 270 points, built around one of the most personal championship stories in recent memory.

The 11 mega-blocos, concentrated in Centro, drew roughly 53% of the total audience despite being a tiny fraction of the overall event count. Cordão da Bola Preta alone brought an estimated 1 million people to the streets on February 14th. At the other end of the scale, about 37% of registered blocos had crowds under 500 people, neighborhood gatherings that keep carnival rooted in community.
A few blocos generated the most coverage. Fervo da Lud drew a reported 600,000 revelers to the Preta Gil Circuit on February 17th. CNN Brasil covered the event live, with Ludmilla stepping off the truck and jumping into the crowd mid-set, a moment that circulated widely.

Cordão do Boitatá marked its 30th anniversary with a milestone: the bloco had grown large enough to receive its first official mega-bloco designation from the city, earning a spot on the Preta Gil Circuit in Centro alongside Rio's biggest street parties. They celebrated by doing it their way — 250 live musicians and nearly 400 members marching through the streets, forgoing the massive amplified sound trucks that most mega-blocos center their parade around. Cordão da Bola Preta, at 107 years old, took over Centro on February 14th with Paolla Oliveira as its queen, drawing the season's largest single-bloco crowd. Simpatia É Quase Amor marked 40 years in Ipanema with a tribute to indigenous peoples. Monobloco closed it all out on February 22nd, as always, with controlled chaos.
Special Group Results
The Special Group parades ran February 15–17, with Unidos do Viradouro winning a perfect 270.0 points. Acadêmicos de Niterói, who were promoted last year after winning the Série Ouro, finished last and returned straight to the second division. União de Maricá takes their place in 2027.

Champion Spotlight: Unidos do Viradouro
Viradouro's winning enredo was a deeply emotional tribute to Mestre Ciça (Moacyr da Silva Pinto), one of the most legendary mestres de bateria in the history of Rio's Carnival.
The enredo celebrates Ciça's 70 years of life and 55 years dedicated to samba school parades, coinciding with Viradouro's own 80th anniversary. Born and raised in Estácio, the birthplace of samba, Ciça went on to lead the bateria of multiple iconic schools including Estácio de Sá, Unidos da Tijuca, Grande Rio, and União da Ilha, before becoming the defining figure of Viradouro's modern era.
