Paying homage to the workers of downtown Rio, the " Rua do Mercado" band´s puts its block on the street always saluting great characters of the cultural history of Rio de Janeiro: samba dancers, writers, journalists, among others, such as Garrincha, Lamartine Babo, Ricardo Cravo Albin, Ruy Castro, Haroldo Costa, Martinho da Vila, and Tia Surica. The Band was one of the precursors of the resumption of street carnival and became known for dragging crowds through the streets of Rio's historic center on the Thursday before carnival.
